Credit Basics

Your credit report and rating is something that can make a real difference to your life, and those with good credit will find things a lot easier in many ways than those with poor credit. Many areas of your life may be affected by your credit, and those with poor credit will not only find it difficult to get finance but may also find it hard to rent a home or even get certain jobs because of their financial status.

In order to keep your credit in good order and also to ensure that you do not experience the problems that relate to having bad credit there are a number of steps you can take. These include:

    • Regular checks on your credit reports. You may find that a mistake has been made on your credit report and this could affect you even though it is not your fault. Or you may be getting penalized for something that another person did, such as the previous tenant or owner of your property. Keeping a close eye on your credit rating will enable you to iron out such discrepancies quickly.
    • If you have no credit, find a way to build your credit up as this will stand you in good stead for the future. You will often find lenders that offer credit cards designed to help build up and repair credit, and these are suitable for those with no credit as well as those with poor credit.
    • If you already have poor credit, you will find that some lenders offer credit cards and loans to help repair this, but you must ensure that you keep up with repayments otherwise your credit rating could plummet even further and become even more difficult to repair.
    • Always try and avoid making late payments on credit cards, loans, bills, etc, or worse still missing repayments altogether. Doing this could really affect your credit rating, and what takes a few months to ruin could take many years to repair.
